Music teacher Alamelu passed away on January 31 at the age of 90. She resided at Mylapore for two decades with her son N.Venugopalan and daughter-in-law B. Kalyani, retired music teacher.
A veteran vocal and veena teacher, Alamelu’s disciples came from all corners.
She started Sri Kamakshi Sangeeta Kalaasaalai in Mannargudi during the 1960s.
She was awarded a financial grant by the Sangeetha Nataka Academy, Tamil Nadu for many years for the development of Carnatic music through her music school.
She was a regular harmonium accompanist to veteran Bhagavathars on Sampradhaya bhajans.
Her family said she had created a multiple raga musical framework for many slokas/ ashtakams and is remembered for its designs.
