Rev. George Antonysamy is new Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore diocese

The Catholic diocese of Madras-Mylapore has got a new Archbishop. He is Rev. George Antonysamy. Pope Benedict XVI made this appointment and this was announced in Vatican city on Wednesday.

The news was shared locally by Fr. Charles Kumar, chancellor of the Madras-Mylapore diocese. The Archbishop functions from the Bishops House in San Thome, and its campus is alongside the St. Thomas Cathedral.

The new archbishop hails from Tiruchi and was ordained a priest in 1980. He studied at St Joseph’s in Tiruchi and pursued studies abroad, getting his doctorate in pastoral theology.

Currently, he is the Apostolic Nuncio ( the ambassador of the Pope in Sierra Leone, Gambia and Liberia).

He is expected to take charge shortly. He succeeds Rev. A M Chinnappa who has retired. The diocese is in charge of over 100 parish communities covering the city and some suburbs.
