May George, woman chief engineer who created housing for common people in city passes away

One of Madras’ prominent personalities , a woman who contributed to public housing, May George passed away this morning. She was the first woman Chief Engineer of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB).

Her body is now at 3, 6th Cross, CIT Colony, Mylapore.

The funeral is to be held at Our Lady of Light Church in Luz at 9 a.m.

May George is known to have effected new housing plans in the colonies of Anna Nagar and elsewhere in the city but she was feted for her hosting plans for the poor of the city via the Housing Board.

Very much her own person who had her say in the board room and with building contractors, May once said that she learnt  some good lessons she she was Head of the city-based Govt. Polytechnic on the need for skills training.

She retired from govt. service in 1983.

She was also a social service minded person. She was the charter member of of the Zonta Club of Madras which went on to start what is a unique home – a home for HIV positive women who are ostracized or nowhere to go. It now runs in suburban Madambakkam.
