Residents of hostel for SC/ST students in Mylapore protest

Students who reside at the Government Hostel for SC and ST college students located in Kapalithotam in Mylapore staged a protest outside their campus on Wednesday highlighting the pathetic conditions on campus and the state’s silence on these issues.

This campus is located in the midst of slums on the banks of the Buckingham Canal, close to the bridge that links with the Sai Baba Temple. The single storied building houses about 100 plus students, all of whom attend colleges in the city.

Students say that only 3 of the ten washrooms can be used since the rest are in a bad condition, that the building and rooms have not been repaired and whitewashed for years, that garbage in common places is not cleared and that food served to them is often tasteless.

They say that have petitioned the Adi Dravida Dept. many times but little has been done to improve life here. That is why they first staged a sit-in protest and then attempted to come out and protest. Mylapore police persuaded them to give up on the protest.

Students here study at the Guindy Engineering College, Govt Arts College in Nandanam and other city colleges.
