Coastal Clean-up held this morning; waste is immense in San Thome zone

On Sunday morning June 19more than 5800 volunteers collected 59 tonnes of garbage in Chennai and 12 other cities as part of the 7thyear edition of the Chennai Coastal Cleanup organized by the Chennai Trekking Club.

The volunteers covered the Marina, San Thome and Foreshore Estate in this campaign. Incidentally, these zones of the city generate the largest amounts of non recyclable waste and for obvious reasons.

In Chennai 4500 volunteers from 140 organizations including Corporates, NGOs and other groups segregated 38 tonnes from 20km of beaches from Marina to Uthandi and recycled 56% while the rest moved to the landfill.

This is part of an annual awareness campaign to sensitize the public on our growing garbage footprint and the negative impact of plastics on our environment and the need to start segregating at home and say no to single use plastics in order to create a more sustainable future, say members of the CTC.
