Four deacons will now serve at the religious services at St Thomas Cathedral in San Thome; they took charge this past week. The four deacons were presented to the congregation at the end of the morning Holy Mass at the church.
While one is from the diocese and another from outside, two others are Jesuits who study at Satya Nilayam, Thiruvanmiyur.
Deacons in the Catholic church are those who are in training for priesthood and are assigned certain religious assignments at churches, worked around their studies and training schedules. The deacon assignment also prepares them for priesthood.
Since Masses are said through the day at the cathedral and ministry work is tight on weekends, the services of more deacons is enlisted here.
