Prasanna Ramaswamy directs ‘Kandava Vanam’, Thamizh play

Acclaimed theatreperson and Mylaporean, Prasanna Ramaswamy is presenting her new play in Thamizh, “Kandava Vanam’ under the banner of Koothu-p-ppatarai at the latter’s theatre space in Virugambakkam.

The play, written by the celebrated playwright N. Muthuswamy has lighting design by his son Natesh and features a host of actors including those who sing/recite in chorus as part of the play.

The play focuses on an episode in the Mahabharat where the Pandavas decide to build a city in a forest and Krishna and Arjuna go about burning the forest.

Muthuswamy has dramatised this portion of the epic and Prasanna, as is her wont to work with ‘inter-textuality’ renders it on stage with music, literary texts and her interpretation in current context where subaltern communities and Nature is displaced even as others remain mute to the changes in this ‘ forest’.

Open to all.

From March 19 to April 2 at Koothu-p-pattarai space in Ilango Nagar, Virugambakkam ( 7 pm on weekdays, 6.30 pm on weekends).

The play will also be staged at Alliance Francaise on April 5  and at Spaces, Besant Nagar on April 9.
