In a ghastly car accident that took place at about 1.30 a.m. on Saturday morning near Dr Ambedkar Memorial in R A Puram, young professional car-racing driver Ashwin Sundar and his wife, Nivedita died on the spot.
The BMW Ashwin was driving ran over the pavement near the sports training campus next to the Memorial and crashed into a tree. Police said the two died on the spot after the car caught fire after ramming a tree but did not say what was the cause of the fatal accident.
The duo reside in Valasarawakkam.
The spot is diagonally opposite the west wall of Sri Ayyappa Temple.
Adyar Traffic Unit of the city police is investigating the case. The mangled car was moved to the police campus in Besant Nagar.
