Panguni fest; people care little for civic restraint

Civic workers in the Sri Kapali Temple zone will heave a sigh of relief that the annual Panguni fest has ended.

Their task of sweeping, gathering waste and disposing it was perhaps a thankless and back-breaking effort.

On Tuesday night, after the Thirukalyanam ceremony and before the procession was to start, temple-contracted workers joined volunteers of Srikanth group to sweep Sannidhi Street, clearing it of paper cups and plates, dropped by people who had food and drink offered as annadhanam here.

The nooks of East Mada Sreet began to stink as leftover food rotted – the annadhanam had continued at a few spots here and people who partook of it flung the plates and cups on the roadside, caring little for civic sense.
