Zero waste project at Srinivasapuram; By volunteers of Chennai Trekking Club

Srinivasapuram zero waste project-1The next time you pass by Srinivasapuram, near the Foreshore Estate bus stand, take a walk along the backwaters of the Adyar river there and you will probably notice that it is a lot cleaner than what it was before.

The reason – for more than six months, volunteers of the Chennai Trekking Club have been assembling there once a week to rid that area of garbage and thereby discourage waste dumping there.

Says Ashok Rajendran, “Through our zero waste project, we hope to spread the message that dumping waste there will only make living conditions more difficult. And out of 4000 households there, we have managed to convince 200 of them to segregate their waste and we hope the others will join us in this effort too”.

The group, guided by Krishnamurthy of Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore recently conducted a kolam competition for the residents of the slum tenements there. More than 200 residents, including children, participated in the competition and also showcased their dance and yoga skills. MLA Mylapore R. Nataraj was the chief guest at this event.
