1940s jewellery shop reopened after renovation; at Mylapore

R. Abdul Kareem and Sons gem shop on Kutchery Road reopened recently after renovation. The store stocks gems and some pre-made jewellery.

The unit was established in the late 19040s by A. R. Abdul Kareem and was one of the first gem-polishing units in Mylapore. His son, A. K. Abdul Rahman, now runs the business.

Abdul Rahman is a fellow of Gemmology Institute of India and Gemmological Institute of America. He is a diamond, colour stone and pearl grader. He specialises in the study of colored gem stones and diamonds.

Many colored gem stones are on display at the store. Some have been set into beautiful designs of ear-rings and necklaces. Customised settings are also undertaken, we are told.

Services offered at the store include jewellery and gem stone grading, polishing and setting.
