Police deny permission to group to hold candle-light meet on Marina

Chennai City Police have denied the May 17 Movement permission to hold a candlelight meet on the Marina to remember the death of thousands of Sri Lankan Tamils in the island in the final part of the war there.

The permit was sought for a meeting on Sunday.

Police said that such meets cannot be held in a public space where large numbers of people congregate.

The issue of using Marina as a space for public protest and meeting has been debated in the public and in courts for some time now and that continues.
