Property tax: Residents to pay upto 50% more

During the last week of July, the Greater Chennai Corporation announced that the property tax rates will be revised and the new rates will be effective from the half year period from April – Sep 2018.
A Corporation official in ward 173 says, “The last time we revised property tax rates was in 1998. We are now asking the residents to fill out a form with details of the total extent of land they own.  There will be an increase in property tax to be paid from this year, it will not be more than 50% for residential buildings and not more than 100% for non-residential buildings. For example if a resident paid Rs. 1 per square feet he will pay not more than Rs. 1.50 now”.

Corporation officials, he says, are now going door-to-door to distribute the forms to the residents. It can also be filed online at www.chennaicorporation.gov.in, he adds.
Can it be done at E-seva centres? He says, “We have not handed over this responsibility to E-seva centres. It can be filed free of cost at the zonal and divisional offices in the neighbourhood”.
The property tax forms have to be filed before Aug 30, he adds.
