Zero Waste project: civic body constructs waste processing centres at ward offices

As a part of the Zero Waste project, local units of Chennai Corporation are constructing Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centres at their ward offices.

AMRF centre has various chambers to store the different kinds of waste separately.

At present, tender coconut waste is kept at one chamber.

Recently, the civic body started collecting bio-degradable and non biodegradable waste separately from streets and households.

Now, the civic workers intend to segregate the non biodegradable waste like plastic waste and electronic waste and send them to corresponding recycling units.

Arul Maran, AE of ward 123 says that after garbage collection, the recyclable and non recyclable items would be segregated and temporarily stored here. “Later, we will send them to various recycling units specified by Chennai Corporation,” he adds.
