Chennai Corporation makes masks compulsory at public spaces

Chennai Corporation has made usage of masks compulsory for all individuals when they are at a public space. The civic body has said that a fine of Rs.100 would be collected if pedestrians are seen without wearing a mask.

In order to prevent the virus spread, the Corporation has invoked provisions of Epidemics Control Act and Public health Act and made wearing of masks compulsory.

“If anyone is found without wearing a mask while moving in public, they will lose their movement passes, irrespective of their reasons to commute and their vehicle would be impounded and license would be suspended for six months, ” said a note released by the civic body.

The Corporation says that the police personnel manning the streets would keep an eye on people without masks and take necessary actions. However, local traffic police say they are yet to receive orders to take action against those without masks.

Says a traffic police inspector attached to E1 Mylapore Police Station off Kutchery Road, “We have not yet received any orders to take action against those without masks. We will start taking action against them once we get an order.”
