Chennai Corporation to allocate school buildings to shelter homeless people

Chennai Corporation has planned to allocate school buildings to serve as temporary shelters for homeless persons.

This is being carried out to avoid congestion at its community halls that currently shelters them.

Once the temporary shelters are allocated, the civic body plans to shift homeless persons at the community hall in Karaneeswarar Pagoda Street to these school buildings.

Says a Chennai Corporation official of zone 9, “As there were 106 inmates at the community hall here, it was becoming highly congested, and we were facing difficulties in regulating them to maintain social distancing. Hence, we are planning to allocate four schools in the city as temporary shelters and shift them there.”

The Corporation has also shifted a group of homeless persons to their native places. “Some 40 inmates wanted to go to their native places that are outside Chennai. Hence, we arranged a private vehicle and sent them,” the Corporation official says.
