Mylapore Post Office staff say they are stretched; want to reassure concerned senior clients

Postal Dept. staff at Mylapore Head Post Office off Kutchery Road say they are overburdened with work as clients visiting the office has increased from May 1.

Says a staff at the Mylapore Head Post Office, “From May 1, at least 100 clients are visiting the office daily. Since only two counters are functional on most days, we are overburdened with a lot of work now.”

She says that mostly seniors above 60 years are dropping in every day to carry out transactions in their savings bank accounts. “We believe they are scared if post offices will close soon. Though we reassure them that the post office would be open on all days, many seniors are dropping in thinking we would close down.”

The limited staff at the office is also a reason for the increase in their workload.  “Many staff are unable to come as they reside at far off places. Hence, we are unable to finish our work within the stipulated time of 1 pm.”

Work is extending up to 5 p.m. nowadays, she adds.

In addition, the postmen also say they are overburdened. Says Ganapathy, a postman, who works here, “Recently, a post office staff at Triplicane post office contracted the virus. Following this, Triplicane post office is closed and the parcel/letter deliveries of Triplicane post office is linked to our office. Hence, we are asked to carry out deliveries there too.”

“Already, we have been doing doorstep delivery of cash through Aadhar Related Payment Services in addition to delivering posts in Mylapore zone.”

Now, as the deliveries from the Triplicane office are also carried out by them, he says they are overburdened.

The post office is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on all days except Sundays. Customers will be sent in through a token system. The office starts giving tokens at 10 a.m. At least 60 tokens are issued every day.
