Pharmacies in Mylapore shut down today from 7 am to 11 am to protest against the death of two Thoothukudi shopkeepers

To protest against the death of two Thoothukudi shopkeepers allegedly in police custody, pharmacies in the neighbourhood have shut down today (June 26) from 7 am.

They will remain closed till 11 am today.

Says the manager at Karuppiah pharmacy on Luz Church Road, “The Tamil Nadu Chemist and Druggist Association (TNCDA) has asked all pharmacies in the state to shutdown  today from 7 am to 11 am, as a mark of protest against two shopkeepers in Sathankulam, Thoothukudi, who allegedly died in police custody.”

We have closed all our branches in the city. However, we have kept our Luz Church Road branch open to serve patients at Meenakshi Multi Speciality Hospital, located just opposite our store, he says.

KosMed Pharmacy on Mandaveli and private medical shops on Mada Streets of Mylapore have shut down.

However, a few pharmacies like MedPlus, East Mada Street and Apollo on South Mada Street are open.

Says a staff at Apollo pharmacy, “We have not received any information regarding the shop closure from our owners. Hence we are open.”

Staff at MedPlus too say they haven’t received information from their owners. And so they are open.

  1. Waiting to see a world where people realise the value of their work to others and dont protest keeping sick people in trouble.

Pharmacies and hospitals have a moral responsibility of safegaurding people’s lives.
Health sector should never close down in protest.
Same goes for veterinary services as well!!
