1992 batch alumni of San Thome School provides funds to educate poor students

The 1992 batch alumni of San Thome Higher Secondary School has reached out to the school this season to support students whose families have not been able to pay the school fees.

30 students of classes 7 and 8, from the English and Thamizh medium streams were chosen for award of scholarships. The funds were handed over at a small event held in the school recently in the presence of Brother Soosai Alankaram, the headmaster. ( 1st photo)

The donation was about Rs.3 lakh. Says alumni batch co-ordinator B. Karthikeyan, “154 members of our 1992 batch are networked and all of us pooled in money to raise this fund.”

All the boys who benefitted come from places like the kuppams located off the Marina and from far-off Kannagi Nagar, where families relocated from the city slums are housed in flats.

The alumni group has also provided support to two Plus One students of the school who excel in sport.

Says Karthikeyan, who runs his own business from Mylapore, “Our alumni are across the world – in UK, USA, Canada – and we contribute whenever we see a need in our old school. We plan to fund these 30 boys till they complete their school education.”

The alumni group, which celebrated its silver jubilee in 2017 has, in the recent past provided support to retired teachers who needed help.

Karthikeyan says some members also visit Brother Selvanathan who used to be the headmaster in the early 1990s; he is now retired and restrained to the campus where he resides.( seen in 2nd photo here)
