Council elections: campaign starts

Campainging for elections to the City Corporation Council elections has begun.

The poll is to be held on Oct.17 and provide you the opportunity to vote for your local area councillor who will represent the ward in the Council.

On Friday, scrutiny of nominations of the candidates who wish to contest to the city Council was done and those whose papers were in order slipped into an informal campaign thereafter.

They plan to go the whole length this weekend and during the puja holidays.

With zone and wards boundaries redrawn after the Greater Chennai entity was created, there is much confusion among people about the ward and zone numbers and where they belong.

Chennai Corporation has done little to run a information campaign yet.

Since political parties are contesting on their own and the large alliances are not in force, most wards will feature multi-cornered contests.

A few independents are also in the fray.

On voting day you will have to vote for your councillor as well as your city Mayor, since the latter’s election is now a direct one.
