Adighara nandhi at Sri Karaneeswarar Temple utsavam

ADHIKARANANDI--AT KARNEESWAR KOIL -18-4-13The Karaneeswarar Temple’s ongoing Panguni festival hosted it’s famous Adighara nandhi this morning ( April 18). The majestic ther carrying the Nandhi on whom Shiva was riding, was a treat to the viewer’s eyes. The royal looking umbrellas, mounds of flowers and a mela kutcheri, with nadaswaram and tavil artistes (four of them) leading the procession.

The temple is located on Bazaar Road, Mylapore and the fest is on from April 16 and will go on till April 26.

Hundreds of people young and old, spilled on to the streets for a darshan. Offerings, including coconuts and flowers were made.

The Nandhi vahanam was followed by Ambal, Murugan and Chandikeshwarar respectively.

“All the power vested in Lord Shiva is passed on to his faithful follower Nandhi. Hence the term ‘adigaram’. The temple’s darshans are very popular here.” says Shanmugham gurukkal, the head priest.

While the procession vended through the narrow streets, peak hour traffic moved on alongside.

Garlands, tamarind rice, ven pongal and sweet pongal were to be later distributed to the devotees. Umesh and Rajalakshmi, local residents say that the utsavam has maintained its tradition and the number of people who attend it have multiplied.
