This web platform can share critical information in real time on flooding

A new web-based platform – RiskMap – which will enable people to share information in real time of flooding has been released just as the monsoon breaks this season. Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group (CAG), a NGO based in Alwarpet is supporting this initiative.Riskmap platform has been developed by MIT Urban Risk Lab and supported by Tata Center at MIT. CAG is supporting its pilot in Chennai and will work with residents, media and government agencies to use the data.

RiskMap India is a crowd-sourced flood reporting platform for residents to share critical information with each other in real-time. People affected by flooding and water-logging can add information to the web-based map using their preferred social media channels – Facebook Messenger, Twitter and Telegram.

Residents as well as government officials can view the map to see recent flood reports and understand changing flood conditions to avoid hazardous areas. For life-threatening situations, residents should continue to call emergency numbers.
The platform is being piloted to help both residents and the government obtain better information on real-time flooding conditions.
 CAG is located at 246 / 277B, T. T. K. Road, Alwarpet. Ph: 24994458, 24660387.

Thank you for publishing this news and helping increase its use in the city. I am writing to request that the first line be amended to say that the Riskmap platform has been developed by MIT Urban Risk Lab and supported by Tata center at MIT. CAG is supporting its pilot in Chennai and will work with residents, media and government agencies to use the data.

    Best regards,
