Independence Day events few and far across Mylapore

The Independence Day celebrations across the Mylapore neighbourhood seemed low profile and few and far.

A speech could be heard on the audio system from the campus of Rani Meyyammai Girls School at about 10 a.m., a late start but held nevertheless.

But there were some early events too – like the one a NGO called Thuvakkam held at Nageswara Rao Park in Luz; besides hoisting the tri-colour it also unveiled its rainwater harvesting campaign.

Down in Rama Rao Road close by residents C S Baskar and Poornima Ashok unfurled the national flag and kids got little gifts. While at Ragamalika Apartments in Mandaveli, some children dressed up in costumes of men and women who led India’s freedom movement while elders sang and led the formalities.

Schools like Lady Sivaswami Ayyar Girls and Sivaswami Kalalaya and Kesari besides others also held simple I-Day events.

Events were also held in churches – after the Mass dedicated to the feast of the Assumption of Mary at Luz church, the national flag was unveiled.

Traffic on the Marina was diverted for those who headed north for the I-Day state event held at Fort St George.

  1. Independence day celebrations at our Narasimhapuram colony in Mylapore was celebrated with all grandeur and the festive spirit of freedom. Our association has recently had a change of guard with an all women team taking over as office bearers. The special theme for our Independence day was to honor the senior and oldest women residents of our colony as a mark of respect to the women freedom fighters. Three oldest women residents of the colony(Mrs. R.B.Savithri, Mrs. Jayalakshmi Gopal and Mrs. Singh) were honoured as guests of honour and hoisted the National flag amidst cheers from the colony residents. The event was marked with celebrations involving recollection of freedom struggle anecdotes by senior residents and patriotic performances by children.

  2. Every Independence Day takes me back to late ‘60s when I was living in East Mada Street. Then CM Sri Bakthavathsalam used to come and unfurl National flag near mandapam. No fanfare. No police. Only a few small children. Occasionally a few Congress workers with a box of toffees. Just a 5 to 20 minutes function. Small children who assembled in invited out of curiosity will sing national anthem. No line of cars. No traffic diversion.
Will we ever see the calm quite Mylapore?

  3. Please correct the information that it was Baskar seshadri and Poornima Ashok hoisted the national flag and not the servant maid ( Though planned earlier) as she suddenly had to leave chennai . Thanks .
