Donate groceries to help visually challenged and physically challenged daily wage earners across the city

This couple in Mylapore is going around the city to help visually challenged and physically challenged daily wage earners during this lockdown.

A.K.Arunachalam and his wife Geetha are residents of K.V.B Gardens in R.A.Puram.

The duo work for the All India Blind Progressive Association, that works for the welfare of visually challenged and physically challenged persons in Tamil Nadu.

Says Arunachalam, state-president of All India Blind Progressive Association, “Most of the visually challenged persons are daily wage workers who sell fruits and other stuff in trains. They lost their livelihood following lockdown as all train services stopped. They were striving hard to even meet their basic needs. So we volunteered to help them out.”

Recently, the duo hired a van and went around areas like Velacherry, Semmencherry, Kannaginagar, and Thiruvallur to distribute rice, provisions, masks to some 100 visually challenged and physically challenged persons. “We also gave them some cash for their daily needs. ”

The duo plan to help more such people in the coming days.

Arunachalam says that they set aside Rs.1 lakh from their organisation for this purpose. “Many of my well-wishers, friends and I too chipped in funds for the donations.”

Though the Tamilnadu government is providing Rs. 1000 for daily wage earners, Arunachalam says it will be of great help if the government provides more financial help for visually challenged and physically challenged daily wage earners considering their disabilities.

He says that 250 such families still need groceries (for one month) to lead their livelihood. People can donate in cash or provide grocery items through this organisation. Arunachalam can be reached at 9962441592.
