New Anganwadi opens at Srinivasapuram

A new Anganwadi has recently opened near the Foreshore Estate bus stop at Srinivasapuram.

It is now catering to underprivileged children and pregnant women of this neighbourhood.

Says Vanitha, who manages operations of Anganwadis in Mylapore area, “Usually, we provide pre-school education to children in the age group of 2 to 5 years.”

“But due to the pandemic, children are asked to stay at home. And hence, we are unable to teach them. However, our teachers have been going around this area to distribute benefits like dry rations, dal to their families.”

She says that as per government rules, children in the age group of 2 to 5 years are entitled to receive these foodstuffs. “Every month, they are given packs of dry rations (rice, dal) and eggs, as per their needs.”

“Besides, our workers also monitor pregnant women in this area from the time they conceive. Periodic health check-ups and medical treatment is provided to them. We also regularly provide them nutritious food items like sathu mavu.”

She adds that nurses from local Urban Primary Health Centres also come to Anganwadis to check pregnant women
