Popular Alphonsa playground cleared of bunks that were stocked here for ages

Finally, all the pre-fab hawker bunks that were stored in the popular Chennai Corporation ground popularly called Alphonsa ground in Mandavelipakkam have been cleared.

Chennai Corporation arranged for all of them to be carted away; this was the last of the operation; the first set of these bunks were dumped in the campus of the Mylapore crematorium.

These bunks were here for close to 2 years and deprived scores of youths from playing here even after pandemic time regulations were dropped.

It needed complaints and pressures from the youths who use this playground on South Canal Road to get the civic body to clear the ground.

Pleas to the Mylapore MLA kept the pressure on him to followup on the clearance.

These bunks were to have been given to hawkers on the Marina but the issue has been caught in a legal case.

However, the stocking of the bunks and the flooding during the last monsoon has messed up the ground; it needs attention.
