Mylapore police has slapped cases against the lone city councillor of the BJP party, Uma Anandan and many others for using the campus of Sri Kapali Temple for non religious purposes without getting the authorisation of the temple management.
Based on a complaint filed by executive officer of the temple, D. Kaveri to the local police, cases have been registered.
The meeting held on August 31, was attended by over 75 people and called by activists who have been carrying on a long-drawn campaign to demand that key temples in the state be governed / managed by the community than by the state, by its HR&CE Department.
Though this meeting was held inside the temple it went on peacefully – but local police had stationed over 40 policemen and women outside the temple, and kept jeeps/van ready to pack off the participants if they sloganeered or got pro-active at the meeting. This did not happen.
Police say that people cannot hold meetings in a temple governed by HR&CE without permission.
Hinduism is the only religion which everyone and anyone can mock at including hindus themselves in the guise and garb of being rational. Where else do the authorities expect a meeting for preservation of temples be conducted other than in a temple? Likewise opening up of positions for priests in Hindu temples from any religion – can the government and courts take a wholistic and impartial view for appointment of judges, let the positions be open for all including common people with appropriate training, after all everything is available on the internet including case laws, judgements etc. In their view all that is required is common sense and freedom
