Long queues have been forming outside ration shops to get the Pongal goodies given by the state.
As word went around about the Pongal special, the queues got bigger, arguments broke out and some heat was generated. So the police had to be called in.
The queues were long since morning, seen in places like R A Puram, Alwarpet and Mylapore. Only those who are given the subsidised rice are eligible for the cash and rice and sugar Pongal gift.
At many ration shops in the area, women police kept an eye on the crowd. This will be on for the next few days.
The bored police were still on duty well after the queues had dried up by 6 p.m. today
