Carnatic music guru Suguna Purushothaman passes away, funeral today

MT Suguna-purushothamanThe funeral of well known and senior Carnatic music vocalist, guru and scholar Suguna Purushothaman who passed away on Wednesday afternoon will start at about 10.30 am from a house in Mandavelipakkam. The last rites are to be held at the crematorium in Besant Nagar.

Suguna, a resident of Abhiramapuram was respected for being a highly knowledgable guru and was decorated with awards by the central and state governments and city-based music academies and sabhas.

She was 74 and had been battling cancer for a long time – yet she made it to key concerts and academic debates till recently.

A sishya of Musiri Subramania Iyer ( Oliver Road in Alwarpet is named after him) besides others, Suguna had a busy performing career and was known for her mastery over the pallavi.
