EcoKonnectors, a not-for-profit organization based in Mylapore, partnered with Munnetram Trust and R K Nagarra to mark Earth Week with a series of activities.
Its volunteers said the aim was to elevate environmental awareness and encourage practical eco-friendly practices, bringing people from diverse communities together.
The event was enriched by collaboration with RWAs (Residents’ Welfare Associations), self-help groups, and corporate CSR.
The key event highlights were :
Workshops and awareness initiatives – an online workshop was conducted and some 30 participants were trained to make bio-enzymes by upcycling fruit, vegetable and flower waste.
A Earth Week event was held on April 27 at R K Nagar OSR Park, Mandaveli. This event featured upcycling workshops: Led by Malathi of Munnetram Trust, attendees learned techniques to create bio-enzymes, sambrani cones, and perfume sachets from household waste.
Interactive Sessions were also held: Aarthi from Bisleri CSR conducted an engaging game to educate attendees on waste segregation, awareness on different kinds of plastic and recycling.
Sathya Priya, animator of Ward 171 spoke on effective waste segregation and waste reduction practices. The councillor of Ward 171, Geetha Murali planted a magizham poo sapling at the venue and emphasised waste management and environmental stewardship.
The EcoKonnectors team, comprising Bala, Sumithra, Ganga, and Ashok, played a pivotal role in advocating for entrepreneurship and empowering women’s SHGs in environment friendly business opportunities.
Eco friendly stalls were put up at the event: HelpHER Stall by EcoKonnectors showcased trendy bags and purses made from repurposed curtain and upholstery materials. Munnetram Trust displayed herbal products, bio enzymes and upcycled soaps, shampoos and other products of the Nirmalyam project.
V-Excel displayed herbal products and crafts by specially-abled adults, inspiring thoughtful consumption.
‘Eco Warriors’ were also honoured – K. Viswanathan (MRWA), R. Chandrasekaran (RAPRA), Uma and Shiv Kumar (Karam Korpom) and Munnetram Trust and others.
RWAs ( residents welfare associations) like RAPRA, Ceebros Greyshott Apartments, Bishop Gardens group, groups of Ashiana Apartments and of Venus Colony and Hamsadhwani Block of Ragamalika Apartments were awarded for their environment friendly and waste management initiatives.
