One of the biggest and longtime encroacher in the area has been cleaned up by Chennai Corporation.
The many brick-breaking and stocking units located in the open air, off Mandaveli MRTS station, along the bridge over the Canal and elsewhere, were cleared by teams of the GCC in a midnight operation.
These operations have been going on for years and no amount of complaining got any response from GCC.
However, early in the morning, some people quickly collected some bricks, erected a structure in the pavement side, and placed idols and framed pictures of gods and lit lamps to make it an instant temple.
When GCC staff visited the spot this morning, arguments broke out.
