Obituary: Visalakshi Srinivasan

Visalakshi Srinivasan (88 years) passed away on June 12 in her home in Alwarpet with her  daughter by her side. She was a resident of Mylapore for over three decades.

She was the mother of S. Janaki, writer, cultural commentator and former editor-in-chief of Sruti magazine. Janaki said her mother was loving, a strict disciplinarian and a matriarch in the apartment complex where she lived. Neighbours young and old would often seek out ‘D3 Mami’ (her apartment number) for  advice.

She was very good at drawing traditional  kolams, cooking and stitching and she played the veena when she was young.

Visalam was a connoisseur of the arts. She  was popularly known in art circles as ‘Amma’ as she regularly  attended  concerts at Mylapore sabha halls, interacted with artistes and freely shared her critiques with them, till her health permitted. She was passionate about Indian art and culture and inculcated the same in her daughter. Having spent over three decades in northern India, her late husband Prof. S. Srinivasan and she were excellent organisers and hosts to several top artistes at home over the years.
