This group which transforms ‘abused’ public walls has a party. To celebrate its 100th project.

An informal party was held last Sunday morning ( June 15) on a quiet R. A. Puram Street to mark a milestone – Karam Korpom Foundation’s 100th social transformation project of turning ‘abused’ public walls into colourful ones.

Over 120 people gathered on Thiruveedhi Amman Koil Street, R. K. Nagar, R. A. Puram, led by the NGO’s founder, Uma Sivakumar.

Up first was the 100th project of this group – to give the wall of the Chennai High School in the area a new look. Some 75 volunteers picked up brushes and paints to draw simple, themed images and colour them, themes that suit the school managed by the city’s civic body.

The NGO and the local residents’ association, TAKSRA (Thiruveedhi Amman Koil Street Residents Association) joined hands to support the milestone event.  Breakfast was served after the painting project got done.

“We chose to celebrate informally,” said the NGO’s leader Shivkumar. “We had volunteers from all over the city.”

These volunteers, under the banner of SAPS (Stop Abusing Public Spaces) have reclaimed and brightened walls of schools and of public spaces like parks and playgrounds and bridges.

Members of funders and supporters were also present as were ex-MLA, R. Nataraj, local DMK leaders and well wishers of the group.
