84th Madras-Colombo Regatta on July 19 on Adyar river. Hosted by Madras Boat Club

The 84th Madras-Colombo Regatta is being hosted by Madras Boat Club on Saturday, July 19 from 2 p.m. onwards.

One of the world’s oldest inter-club rowing events, this regatta will see a historic on-water rivalry between India and Sri Lanka sportspeople.

First held in 1898, the Madras-Colombo Regatta is widely regarded as one of the oldest international inter-club rowing regattas in the world, preceded only by the Oxford–Cambridge and Harvard–Yale races.

The annual event alternates between the Madras Boat Club and the Colombo Rowing Club (CRC).

This year’s regatta will feature fiercely contested races in the men’s and women’s categories across single scull, double scull, coxless pair, and the coxed fours.

The MBC crews will be eager to reclaim the coveted Deepam Trophy (Men’s Overall) and the Adyar Trophy (Women’s Overall), both of which were claimed by CRC on their home waters at Beira Lake in 2024.

The regatta will culminate in a prize distribution ceremony at 6:30 pm, with the chief guest GL Gnanatheva minister (commercial) , Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner’s Office, Chennai presenting the trophies.
