Fire breaks out at GCC’s recycling materials yard in R. A. Puram. Civic activists want better management here

Fire broke out this Wednesday morning ( July 2) at the Chennai Corporation’s yard for disposed materials located off Kamaraj Salai in R A Puram.

As smoke billowed up and workmen tried to contain the fire, a fire engine arrived and put out the blaze.

This is the second time that this yard has caught fire.

Urbaser Sumeet staff are asked to dump here stuff like mattresses, small furniture and glass/ plastic panels that are disposed off by residents of this area. GCC is supposed to clear this off periodically.

But civic activists here say that this yard is too small for this operation. That the stuff is not cleared periodically. That GCC does not have a clear and active local waste recycling plan though this yard is also called a micro recycling yard.

A similar yard set up off the road alongside Mandaveli MRTS rail station also caught fire sometime ago and the yard and a wet waste recycling unit was shut down. This unit staff used to compost wet waste and sell the compost to the public.
