Hundreds of images of lord Vinayaka were immersed in the sea off Pattinapakkan this Sunday, signalling the close of the Chathurthi celebrations.
Since 11 a.m. vans, trucks and mini-lorries carted men and images of the lord to the seashore along Kamaraj Salai and San Thome High Road which were closed to traffic on both sides.
The men who travelled with/in each van helped to carry out the immersion. Cranes were used to lift and immerse the bigger images from a point on the seashore.
Dozens of civic workers ensured waste was cleared off the seashore while many policemen were stationed all along the route and at the seafront to manage law and order.

Earlier in the week, GCC contractors dumped lorry-loads of debris and stones to create a driveway from the main road to the shore side. Activists had strongly objected to this violation and little action was taken.
The Mylapore MLA has said he has been promised by GCC that the debris will be completely removed after the Sunday event.
