Communities of Mylapore hosted India’s Independence Day celebrations on August 15 morning.
Choir music conductor Sudha Raja led a choir of children to perform in the campus of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore after the Indian flag was hoisted here. Officials of the Bhavan and parents of the choir members and guests took part.

Baskar Seshadri reported that the Mylapore MLA, Dha Velu, took part in the national flag hoisting event held at Nageswara Rao Park, Luz. Park regulars were at the event.

Ganga Sridhar reported that the community of Raja Street, Mandaveli focussed on being enviro-conscious in the celebration. They made tricolour thoranams from up-cycled tailoring waste fabric. These were made by tailors patronised by EcoKonnectors group, a NGO. To add buzz to the morning, food stalls were set up in the street corner. There were some fun contests – the best, theme-dressed person for the I-Day event was Jayashree of Shrestha Apartment and Aradhana was chosen for a prize in the children’s category. Staff of Urbaser Sumeet also participated in the event and made to feel at home.

R. Shivakumar reported that Dr. J. S. Rajkumar, chairman and MD of Lifeline Hospitals flagged off and led a run from Rani Meyyammai Girls School to Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple. Some 30 people joined him. He later unfurled the national flag at a makeshift space near the temple..

Students of Lady Sivaswami Ayyar Girls School and the Group’s other schools took out a rally in the Mada Streets zone, with cadets marching in the lead.
The community in Mandavelipakkam met at the K.alyan Nagar Association campus and hoisted the flag. As did the residents of CIT Colony who met at the local GCC park; breakfast was served after the event.


The event organised by the R K Nagara community was at the GCC park in R. K. Nagar, R. A. Puram. Some residents decorated the flag mast and base thematically and seniors took turns to sing patriotic songs.
