On a Sunday morning of grey skies, the hint of light rain and presence of humidity, lots of people gathered on theĀ pavement off the west side of the tank of Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore to perform rituals on the occasion of Mahalaya Amavasai; a time to pray for those who pave passed on.
Only a few people could be accommodated in the space inside the tank marked for this purpose. The rest had to even sit under bus stands.

Being a Sunday, and since traffic is curtailed here due to Chennai Metro work, people found it easy to locate space on the pavement and take part in the rituals.
Hawker stalls had set up shop pre-dawn on North Mada Street and on R K Mutt Road side to cater to the needs of people for the morning ritual.
