The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) pulled up Greater Chennai Corporation forĀ its violations of ‘green’ laws on the Pattinapakkam seaside.
It was critical of the manner in which debris was dumped to create a pathway for the lorries carrying the Vinayaka images to the shore for immersion last Sunday.

It said that though GCC filed a compliance report saying that the civic body had failed to remove the debris from the beach by August 29, as ordered by the Tamil Nadu Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNCZMA).
The Bench was made up of Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member Prakash Gargava.
It pointed out that GCC did not properly ensure that non-polluting materials used in the creation of the images were prevented from immersion.
