The 150th birth anniversary of Dharmaraja Iyer, founder of the forerunner of Sree Karpagavalli Vidhyalaya in Mangollai, Mylapore was celebrated in a quiet manner on Teacher’s Day, Sept.5 at the school campus.
Mylapore MLA Dha Velu inaugurated the function and lit a kutthuvilakku. The school correspondent, Sihvakumar welcomed the gathering.
The teaching staff and a few ‘old students’ were at the event.

Dharmaraja, the grandson of Dharmaraja Iyer was present (The person seated in the chair in second photo here is Dharmaraja)
Dharmaraja was popularly known as Dhadi vadhya because of his long, free-flowing white beard. He was an icon of his times, launching and promoting fine basic education in Mylapore which drew students from all sections and some went on to become famous and tall persons later.
This school’s original name was Sri Karpagavalli Balika Bala Patasahala. Located at a plot off the junction of North Mada and East Mads Streets, Mylapore.
The school has a small community of students now and the new management is trying to improve conditions and draw more children in.
