Kalpagam made five sweets, five savouries for Deepavali

There are still a few people in the Mylapore zone who prepare sweets and savouries at home the traditional way for Deepavali.

Kalpagam Dharmarajan is one of them. A resident of the Chitrakulam zone for over 70 years, she says she has to cook at home for the festival.

“From the time I got married, I have made five sweets and five savouries year after year,” she told us as she packed the last set of sweets she had made.

She laid out all the ten specials she made for us to photograph. This included badam cake, coconut barfi, seven cups cake, rava ladoo, ribbon pakoda, thenkuzhal murukku, oma-poodi and masala mixture.

Kalpagam also made the marundhu. “The marundhu is part of the festival must do jobs,” she said.
