Monsoon Watch: Residential area in Mandaveli floods. Residents say Chennai Metro work cause of headaches

Residents in one zone of Andiman Thottam, a thickly habitedĀ  area located west of the old MTC bus terminus in Mandaveli have had to live with floodwater in their streets the past two days.

Residents said that the water was also polluted.

Local area councillor Amirda Varshini and community activists of Mandaveli zone got down to address the issue after they sent SOSĀ  calls to officials at local level.

Later, civic officials used JCBs to clear blocks in the water flow and used jugaad ways to clear the stagnant water.

Activist Ravi Nandyala of Jeth Nagar said his NGO supplied food packets on Tuesday to families who were disturbed by the flooding.

Some local people said that ongoing work at the Chennai Metro site in Mandaveli, where a station will come up and a shopping-office plaza is planned, is contributing to flooding issues.

They said the leakage of sewage is the big problem.

As online complaints on the issue got escalated, senior civic officials got into the act. Ravikumar, divisional engineer of Metrowater for Mylapore zone took the lead to address the issue. For now, the water-logging is cleared and the main street has been disinfected.
