Alwarpet-based Carnatic vocalist and teacher Geetha Raja’s mother Bhama Balakrishnan, passed away on October 4 at the age of 90.
She was born and raised in Umayalpuram, and after her marriage, she moved to North India. After establishing a stable life in Mumbai, she moved to the United States in her fifties, where she became flu ent in English, learned to drive, and thrived independently in a different environment.
Her passion for music was profound and she shared this love with her daughter, Geetha Raja. She actively led bhajan groups in the Washington DC area during her years in the USA.
A lifelong learner, she completed her bachelor’s degree in her forties, said Geetha Raja.
