On the final Monday of the Karthigai season, observed as Karthigai somavaram, the 1008 sangu abishekam began on December 15 morning at Sri Kapali Temple, Mylapore.
Since the break of dawn, all the decorated conches ( sangu) were placed in an order at the far end of the Navaratri mantapam in the temple and the rituals began later in the day.
