The clock tower roundabout located off Queen Marys College and the headquarters of Tamil Nadu Police on Kamaraj Salai has been for many years the one point where hundreds of people gather to celebrate the break of a new year.
Tonight, people plan to head here for a symbolic celebration. The roundabout is generally illuminated and when the clock strikes 12, people scream and cheer and hoot and exchange wishes. Many families also gather here.
The big police security around maintains some order and people are asked to disperse soon after.
Police have have many security arrangements in the San Thome – Marina zone. People are asked not to venture into the beachside after 6 p.m. Police patrols and mounted police will secure the beachside pff Loop Road.
Police will also be stationed near churches in San Thome; many churches hold midnight Masses / services.
