24×7 Metrowater supply. In a part of R. A.Puram. Officials, residents discuss issues

24×7 supply of drinking water. A Metrowater project which is underway in a part of the city. And it will be coming to south end of R. A. Puram.

This past week, Metrowater’s team for ward 171 ( which covers a slice of south R. A.Puram and Adyar north) met locally with residents and association leaders to discuss the project.

CMWSS team with their consultants WATCO have been conducting all their surveys for this project since 2023 in Chennai

AIMS OF PROJECT

1) Relaying the age-old water pipelines
2) Stop all kinds of water pollution
3) Provide 24×7 water supply monitored by smart metering system.
4) Provide clean potable water to all.
5) Users pay for the water they consume as charged by the meter.

Metrowater says there is ample supply of water in the reservoirs to be able to support this concept. This project has already been in the pilot stage in Thiruvanmiyur area and is going successful, said Metrowater.

PEOPLE’S POINTERS

  • Ensure all houses get proper and clean water supply. Metrowater said this will automatically happen when they lay fresh pipelines.
  • People representing the densely populated areas of Govindaswamy Nagar had concerns – first provide clean drinking water, then talk about 24×7. They said their water is polluted.-
  • Query from one resident – If Metrowater provides 24×7 supply , will this not  lead to people completely depend on this water and not using ground water and stop rainwater-harvesting? ( Officials said since water usage is metered, people will use it wisely)
  • Query from Mandaveli resident – water can be wasted when the Metro sumps fill up locally. ( Officials say the new pipelines will be such that there will be automatic valve cut off when sumps get filled and individual connection smart metering will be installed.)
