Marina residents oppose prelim work on cable car project

Residents of areas off the Marina have staged a protest in this zone after engineers of the city’s civic body started soil tests for the proposed cable car project.

The engineers backed off, witnesses at the spot said.

This project and the GCC’s new Blue Flag Beach project has upset residents off the Loop Road in recent times and they have had meetings on ways to oppose the two plans.

They say that construction for the cable car project will go against coastal regulations. And that Blue Flag Beach projects envisage asking fishers to remove boats, nets and fishing gear from traditional fishing areas on the Marina and affects many food and toy hawkers here.

It seems like the state officials backed off to contain what could be a contentious issue that can flare up on the eve of the state elections.

The Loop Road colonies is a large constituency of the electorate and the DMK, whose MLA currently is from the party and is also seeking a ticket for the 2026 poll, cannot afford rubbing these residents on the wrong side.
