Sri Durga Coffee House on North Mada Street was known for its staple Udupi food and shoppers with a small purse frequeted it. It shut shop on March 31`.
Many factors drove its owner Raghavendra Rao who runs a chain of resturants, to bring down the shutters for good. Labour issues, varying footfall and rising costs besides new, hot-shot restaurants on the mada veedhis.
This joint was famous for the easy-on-the-purse food – Idly, poori and vada-curry. Regulars said the taste of the poori -vadacurry combo was the best. They would skip the kuruma.
Though the central kitchen for this Durga place was in its main branch on Royappettah High Road ( Hotel Durga Bhavan), certain items had to be cooked in Mylapore.
Sri Durga Coffee House functioned for about 15 years.
