MRC Nagar community goes to court. Seeks relief from heavy traffic flow, illegal parking and unauthorised shops

The MRC Nagar Residents Association has filed a public interest litigation in Madras High Court saying that the heavy traffic flow in the locality due to many reasons and spread of unauthorised shops is affecting life in what is a residential zone.

The PIL was filed on April 1 and the court issued notices to Greater Chennai Corporation ( GCC) and Commissioner of Police, Chennai.

Listed in the PIL are these issues –

  • Parking of scores of vans and mini vans that transport students to the schools in the area; some are parked here through the day
  • Parking and misuse of public space by vehicles of Sun TV Network whose offices are in this area
  • Unauthorised bunks and shops in the Sri Ayyappa Temple zone
  • Expanding retail stores and food stalls leading to more staffing, more customers and more traffic in residential zones
  • The petition stated that Sun TV had advised its staff sometime ago, after the association represented the problem to it, not to park bikes/cars on the road and this had helped reduce bottlenecks

The petitioner is a resident and the association secretary, S. K. Navaz.
