Chennai Corporation’s contract workers are working hard to sink small wells along roadsides or on pavements in a bid to tap water that floods the place or stagnates too long, especially in ‘problem’ areas.
This may be a bit too late in the day as the monsoon has arrived. In many places where work has been completed the pavements are dotted with fresh soil or broken pavement slabs.
San Thome High Road, inner Mylapore roads and Luz Avenue ( photo featured here) are spots where we have seen small wells being sunk on the roadside.
The hope is that the rainwater will be sucked into the ground quickly and stagnation is minimal.
